The Fisherwoman of Sanibel Island, Florida | Esperanza Woodring | Untold Stories Shorts
Sanibel Island, Florida is known for its natural beauty and abundant fishing grounds. While most see the fishing community in Southwest Florida as a man’s world there was one woman who surpassed them all. Esperanza Woodring was born on Cayo Costa, a small island north of Sanibel, to a family known for their fishing prowess. She began fishing as soon as she could walk and married a Sanibel fisherman who also loved being on the water. They raised their family on Sanibel in a house that their son continues to live in today. After her husband’s death, Esperanza continued providing for her family and community through various jobs and responsibilities. See how this fisherwoman made a difference on land and sea and left an indisputable mark on Sanibel.
The sunshine state has a rich and colorful history. For hundreds of years the state has attracted dreamers, opportunists, inventors and fortune-seekers. WGCU's Untold Stories aims to preserve the history of Southwest Florida communities.

I grew up in Arkansas, daddy was a farm mechanic. The farmer allowed us 1 acre for a garden and 5 acres for pasture. We raised our food (except coffee, sugar and flour) We slaughtered our cows, pigs and chickens. That is a reality check leaning nothing in life is free except sunshine and rain

I follow news worldwide. Nell Gammage is right. Look at the farmer protests across Europe, India and Sri Lanka. Governments are trying to put farmers and ranchers out of business in the name of preventing climate change. In Zimbabwe and South Africa, the Gov't simply takes the land and gangs often kill the farmers. There will be food shortages. All caused by gov't policy. Look at Oregon and Idaho. They are destroying farms and ranches by taking the water. Corporations can buy land and sell the water rights to a developer or challenge the water rights of a property owner who cannot afford the hundreds of thousands of dollars to defend themselves. We built our house 32 years ago near the old phosphate mines south of Lakeland surrounded by groves. Greening killed the trees after Hurricane Andrew. Now we have pastures on 3 sides, but subdivisions are encroaching in the distance where the old groves were. My wife calls the cows mooing "God's music" Thank you for this history.

Barrier islands without population do its job. I was a ranger at Cayo Costa state when Ian made landfall. Idalia actually did more damage to the dunes. The surge was higher with Idalia. The erosion was incredible after Idalia. We lost the rest of our sea turtle nests, and the surge inundated the park. The winds and rain from Ian did more structural damage, and freshwater flooding.

As usual people for a cause think only in extremes. To fill in a hundred miles of a canal all you have to do is block the outlet. Nature will fill in the rest of the canal on its own with time. Whenever it comes to persuading public opinion the proponents speak in extremes to sway opinion. It undermines their credibility to those who actually study the subject.

This is pure bull. Yes they developed a lot of swamp, but there is so much swamp left its more than enough. Dare anyone to hike thru the swamp and see if they survive. Its still huge. more than enough for anyone to get lost, which they still do. And yes the Everglades are a tireless wasteland.

I canoed through back in Jan '94. Everglades City to Flamingo. Went in and out of major rivers such as the Broad, Harney, both the Sharks, big and little. Cut through the Nightmare and got stuck in it till middle of the night after mistaking the Wood River and then the tide ran out. I had canoed to Comer Key previously with a friend. Later, I went back with a GF and paddled to Panther Key, and then to Comer again. We both got stung by a scorpion, which I fed to a crab. I was supposed to be leading a group, but my alternator had shit, and nobody noticed. They got tired of waiting but one couple who were friends waited at the put in Everglades City until sunset when Peg and I finally arrived. I assured them I could lead us out at night against the tide to Panther Key. It would be very arduous paddling though. I had an aluminum canoe. A MitchiCraft. They decided to bail. Peg and I went out alone. Next morni g we paddled by a Logger Head sea turtle wanting to lay eggs where we had camped. Id seen her going back and forth waiting for us to leave. Ive seen porpoises there and also hundreds of sharks at once. I saw N Americsn Salt Crocs down in the south end of the park. I passed a huge high overgrown dark mound on the Harney I think. It was an island dividing the river I believe. Going into any bush or trees on any island was terrible from mosquitos. I passed it by. It couldve been an old ship from the shape of it, but it was really big. Couldve come in a storm or been shallow flat bottom. Makes me wonder why the Siminole didnt attack, trap and sink into the rivers, our ships. They couldve used them as forts and physical barriers. I cant imagine living there, yet I basically did, in my sailboat for several years in Florida Bay side of the Keys. I remember freaking out desperate at night aboard my abchored sailboat from the stilefling heat and humidity, sweating with mosquitos in every orifice. I jumped off once, but the water hot and and I almost died breathing in mosquitoes on the surface. It choked me out bad. I made a snorkle with a screen extension, and then would float on my stomach tethered to my boat and sleep, though only when it was unbearable. Only a handful of times. There were crocs and sharks and idiots with badges and boats, who might come along and mince me.

People in Florida have more money than Brains, We have a very dangerous Ice Shelf. It holds about 2 to 3 meters of sea level rise Scientists are very concerned, this Glacier is ready to go at any time, it would put Florida's lands 52% underwater and it will happen This wasn't suppose to happen before 2100 Then it was recently dropped to 2050 and now 2030 is looking real good for disaster of costal cites around the world We are the Frogs in cool water coming to a boil, we will never recovery the economical damage from this

My great great grandfather was native American Indian from the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The Ocokee tribe from Ocracoke. They were driven off the island by white settlers. They migrated west to the Great Smokie Mountains where they eventually were accepted by the Cherokee tribe. My grandfather was half Cherokee half Ocokee. I am disgusted at how our native people all over this country are still treated so unfairly!

I remember my favorite book as a kid “Wondrous World of Fishes” There was a chapter devoted to the Tarpon and one photo captivated me the most . It was a big Tarpon launching itself into the air and I never thought I’d be so lucky as to catch and land one. But decades later while live baiting for King Macks on the end of Avon pier my dream came true. Just as I was about to reel up and head for home a 5 footer slid into view on its side and opened its mouth , sucking my live Spot in like a vacuum. I nearly shit my pants from excitement 😂. I set the hook before it even had a chance to pop my release clip . Jump after amazing jump , backflips , writhing somersaults. I was almost in a panic thinking it was surely going to throw my hooks , but it never did. We netted the prehistoric leviathan and released it quickly , taking no more than a minute to unhook it and snap a photo. Unfortunately it did not appear to make it. It was bleeding from its gill profusely because the wire had gotten behind its gill when it changed direction during the last few minutes of the battle. Still my most memorable moment of fishing . Tarpon are an extra special catch from any pier this far north of Florida and it felt like I won the lottery that day
